I knew exactly what I was going to do for my photo of the day! I had it all planned out and it was going to be awesome. Well… then I got busy working and spending time with the kids and by the time I remembered, it was 8pm and there wasn’t much natural light left outside. I grabbed a bunch of gear and headed out into my yard, wondering what I could find before it got dark. I came across the first flowers of the season - these tiny white clusters, barely visible to the naked eye they were so tiny. I sprayed some water drops onto them and set to work… it didn’t take long to realize, there was not enough light to pull this off.
I rarely think to use my flash because I adore natural light, but today it was my only option. And what d’ya know? It actually turned out pretty cool. I laid out on the grass snapping away until dusk was upon us and night was falling. But it didn’t matter because I had my own light source and the circumstances could no longer get in the way.
When things get dark and there seems to be no way out, add some light to the situation!
John 8:12 “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”
For all you photographers out there, I snapped a quick shot of my setup (below). I had my flash hooked up to my pocket wizards so I could fire it off camera. I set it up just below the little flower and snapped off the shots you see with a black background. To add some colour I placed the water bottle in behind them for a few shots and that’s what gave me the blue background in the center photograph (above).
I shot the images using my 100mm 2.8 macro lens with three extension tubes. f/13, 1/30sec, ISO 200
