Without doubt, there is romance in the air in Venice! With picturesque views in every direction, narrow little canals and hidden passageways, centuries-old architecture and violin music in the streets, Venice infuses love into the heart of the greatest cynic. Add to that the symbolic love locks attached to the ornate bridges, and it’s downright swoon-worthy!
Becoming increasingly popular over the past 14 years, love locks have actually been around for over 100 years, dating back to a tragic love story from World War 1. Tradition says, if you want to protect your love, attach an inscribed paddock to the rails of a bridge and throw away the key.
Love locks of all shapes and sizes are attached to some of Venice’s 400 bridges, remnants of many affairs of the heart. While controversial in cities around the world, and often removed by those seeking to preserve a bridge’s authenticity, a hopeless romantic like myself cannot help but be swept away by the enchanting love stories they each confess.
