The photography assignment I’ve given my students this week is “Time.” Anything and everything related to time is open to interpret in a conceptual image for this project. Reading over the list of idioms about time, there were many that struck me, but the one that stood out the most was “I’ve got time on my hands.”
I started to think about that. Of course, the phrase is referring to extra time with nothing important to do. A similar phrase came to mind as well: “I’ve got blood on my hands,” which is implying guilt for a crime. I decided to combine the two phrases into a concept that begs to be explored.
Will there come a day that we must give account for the way we spent our time? At the end of our lives are we responsible for how we lived our days? Will we look back at the hours, weeks, months and years and have to face the reality of never being able to go back and do it over?
The big question is: will you be satisfied with the outcome?
Or will you be standing there with blood on your hands - the blood of the times you could have made a positive difference but chose indifference; the times you had the opportunity to show someone love but it was easier to let someone else do it; the times you knew the truth but refused to open your mouth and let it ring loud and clear; the times you saw someone being mistreated but turned a blind eye?
Thought for the Day
That is for each of us to figure out. I, for one, believe that yes, I will have blood on my hands for the wrongs I have done. It will be the blood of Jesus come to wash away every mistake I made and set me free. For no matter how I spent my time, there will undoubtedly still be times I could have done more, said more, said less. For me, the relief is that He knit me together in my mother’s womb, knew every honourable and dishonourable thing I would ever do… and yet still chose me to be a part of His family. Do I still strive to spend my time showing love, giving hope, spreading joy? You bet I do! But it’s through His strength that I can do it, because of the gift of His Spirit. And for the times I fail, He has already accounted for them and blew them away on the winds of Heaven’s mercy.
As with all conceptual art, this image is meant to make you think and explore beliefs, ideas and concepts about life. It may mean something different to you than it does to me. What does it say to you?
