I am definitely a rule follower. And a rule maker. In general, I just really love rules! Rules for life, rules in my house, rules for school, rules for photography. They give me boundaries and structure - I feel safe when I know what to do and what to expect.
But every once in a while, breaking the rules is rewarding! In this case, I asked my students to use the wrong white balance for a photo with a mysterious feel. White balance is intended to help keep the colours accurate in an image. Using the wrong one would throw off the colour and give the whole photo a strange colour cast.
Now this could be a lot of fun!
I decided to do my photo about “The Disappearance of Yancy Hanarov” (a fictional character) and set out in the rain to capture the mystery of story. Breaking the rules proved to be just the colour treatment that I needed and without using Photoshop at all, I was able to produce a dark and gloomy looking image right in-camera.
Thought for the Day
Sometimes it’s exciting to colour outside of the lines and “break the rules” of what’s predictable in our lives. It can keep things exciting and fresh when we shake them up a bit. Do you always sit down to eat lunch together at the table? How about tomorrow you put a blanket on the living room floor and turn it into a picnic! Do you usually eat with a fork or spoon? Dig out big utensils like the spatula, potato masher or ice cream scoop and eat dinner with them instead! Do you always say prayers with the kids before bed? How about tonight you sing what you are thankful for at the top of your lungs. Do you all sleep in your own beds, tucked in tight? Why not set up a tent in the basement and sleep together as a family. Does mom usually make dinner? Tell the kids they get to run the restaurant tonight and “cook up” whatever they can imagine to serve you as their guest. Do you get the kids dressed when they get up? Tell them that tomorrow they can spend the whole day in dad’s t-shirts!
Have fun! Be unpredictable! Make rules, but learn when to break them if it means the outcome is better.
Let life be an adventure!
